## **Making silver programmable: Redesigning how real-world assets come to market**

By aligning legal accountability, operational control, and blockchain infrastructure, Universal DeFi and Altus are building a repeatable platform for bringing real-world assets on-chain. It starts with silver and is designed to scale well beyond it.

## **The Opportunity: Bringing Wall Street assets to a market that never closes**

### **Expanding from lending desk to on-chain market**

**Universal DeFi** was built on years of experience in traditional finance, including corporate lending to publicly listed companies. That experience revealed a recurring problem: many financial assets are difficult to divide, costly to transfer, and accessible only through specific intermediaries during limited market hours.

Universal DeFi saw an opportunity to remove these constraints by bringing financial markets on-chain. The goal was not simply to digitize existing instruments. It was to create a marketplace where institutional-grade financial products could trade fractionally and globally, 24 hours a day, within an infrastructure designed to support compliance. That vision led to the creation of Ault Chain, a 24/7 settlement layer for real-world financial assets and the foundation of Universal DeFi’s on-chain marketplace.

But the infrastructure alone do not make a market. A market needs assets that circulate, so that liquidity, activity, and yield accumulate within the ecosystem. To start that flywheel, the chain needed a differentiated asset designed to trade natively in its own market.

### **Starting with silver, building for everything after**

Universal DeFi, as the platform operator within **the ecosystem**, chose real-world asset tokens to be that starting point: silver first, then precious metals such as gold and platinum, and ultimately securities. The goal was never a one-off product. By taking a single asset through the full tokenization lifecycle, Universal DeFi aimed to prove a component-based model that could absorb new asset classes without changing the platform's core engine.

To build it, Universal DeFi partnered with Altus. The relationship had begun during the development of the blockchain ecosystem, so Altus already understood its business, technical environment, and long-term ambition, and it brought years of experience designing and deploying blockchain infrastructure.

## **The Solution: Building for the full life of a silver token**

A silver token is a promise: one token, one verified claim on physical silver. Keeping that promise is less a smart-contract problem than a workflow-design problem spanning legal accountability, regulatory requirements, operational handoffs, and technical controls. Every token action must correspond to a verified event in the physical world, and every event needs a clear owner and an auditable record.

### **Mapping the workflow before designing the platform**

The team decomposed the joint journey of a silver bar and its token into stages: sourcing the metal from a supplier; receiving it into custody; confirming the physical backing; authorizing issuance; circulating the token; and, handling the token's burn, arranging delivery, or resolving a dispute when redemption is requested. For each stage, they mapped the parties involved, the handoffs between them, the decisions required, and the evidence supporting those decisions.

Much of this workflow existed nowhere on paper. To verify the map against reality, Altus's forward-deployed engineers worked on-site alongside **Universal DeFi**, walking each stage with the party that would actually run it.

That verification paid off immediately. Key parts of the process ran through parties outside the platform, and several foundational questions were still open: what an asset provider must submit to request issuance, what evidence would qualify the platform to approve a mint, and how that mint would then be executed. Working on-site, Altus’s engineers set the conditions under which one token could stand for one unit of physical silver, and defined the criteria each step would have to meet. Resolving these questions while the design was still a document allowed the workflow to align with its external dependencies before any part of it was implemented in code.

### **Treating redemption as the core, not an edge case**

Once in circulation, tokens move freely through on-chain markets, whether traded on a decentralized exchange, divided into fractional units, transferred between eligible participants, or posted as collateral. Redemption is where the underlying promise becomes tangible. A token holder can request physical silver when needed, without carrying the day-to-day burden of storing it.

Supporting that option required designing well beyond the burn transaction. Redemption coordinates the issuer, custodian, and logistics providers from request through delivery. At each step of the process, including approval, release from custody, and shipment, the responsible participant uploads the evidence required for that step. The resulting chain of evidence can demonstrate that the token holder received quality-assured silver. If an exception occurs, it can also show where the process broke down and which party held responsibility at that point.

## **The Impact: Gaining a platform, not just a product**

Within one quarter, Universal DeFi moved from workflow specification to active platform development. The upfront investment in mapping the lifecycle and settling questions of authority paid off directly: development began on a design whose operational logic had already been resolved, rather than being renegotiated mid-build.

What Universal DeFi owns as a result is more than a silver token. It is a tokenization platform in which the next assets on its roadmap, copper, gold, and eventually securities, arrive as adapter work rather than new technology projects. This is possible because the platform assumes a workflow abstracted into the layers every tokenized asset shares, such as originator, issuer, custodian, and proof of reserve, so the capacity to add new assets is built into the abstraction itself. Each expansion reuses the same engine, evidence model, and approval structure, so the cost and time of bringing a new asset to market fall with every addition. The same foundation positions **Universal DeFi** to eventually open the infrastructure to third-party issuers.

Just as important is the capability that stayed in-house. Altus worked through a forward-deployed engineering model, with engineers embedded alongside Universal DeFi until the architecture, legal logic, and operating model converged. Through that collaboration, **Universal DeFi’s** teams became better equipped to operate and extend the system themselves rather than depending on an outside vendor.

In the near term, Universal DeFi brings to market a silver token that removes the familiar limitations of traditional silver products: restricted trading windows, limited divisibility, and the operational burden of direct ownership. This gives **the chain** the differentiated native asset its market needed to begin circulating liquidity.
